Why Do We Celebrate Valentine's Day?

Why Do We Celebrate Valentine's Day?

The month of February always evokes thoughts of hearts, cupids, and mushy love notes.

Valentine’s Day is a holiday in which many of us strive to show just how much we care about our significant others.

I wonder how many dollars are spent each year on flowers, chocolates, and expensive meals!

This year, I found myself contemplating why we celebrate February 14th in this way.

Is it simply an effort to prove how deserving we are of love in return?

If this is true, it means that our earthly idea of love is vastly different from the love of our Heavenly Father.

Romans 5:6-8 says,

“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person, though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die, but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Red hearts at the bottom of a white graphic with text that says, “…but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

God’s love for us is so very undeserved.

We did nothing to earn it or to prove ourselves worthy.

Despite our sinful nature, however, Christ still made the ultimate sacrifice for us.

Furthermore, He did this solely out of love, not to prove Himself or in an effort to earn something in return.

This Valentine’s Day, I challenge you to be truly thankful for Christ’s unconditional, unmerited love and to extend this kind of love to others.
