Finding Comfort in Silence

Finding Comfort in Silence

A few weeks ago, I spent time in Lynchburg, Virginia at Liberty University.

As an online student, I do most of my assignments virtually.

However, for my course in counseling skills, I had the opportunity to travel to campus for a week of face-to-face learning. It was a wonderful week in which I was able to connect with fellow students and learn the practical skills that I will use every day as a counselor.

One of the most valuable skills for a counselor is silence.

When a counselor refrains from speaking, it gives the client time to process their emotions.

The quiet moment also allows the counselor more time to craft a response that will be most beneficial for the client’s situation.

Have you ever thought of Christ as our counselor?

Text that says, “Have you ever thought of Christ as our counselor?”

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you.” (Psalm 32:8, ESV)

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” (John 14:26, ESV)

It is so comforting to know that we always have the Holy Spirit with us to guide us, counsel us, and support us through our trials.

What isn’t so comforting, however, is the silence.

God works in ways that we do not always notice immediately, hear, see, or understand. But we can trust that He is always watching over us, constantly listening to us, and tirelessly working on our behalf.

The next time you find yourself becoming impatient with the silence, take a minute to breathe.

Use that quiet time to sink into God’s presence, process the emotions you are feeling, and find comfort in the fact that God is taking His time to craft a response that is perfect for you.
